What are the aims of the partnership?
Year 9 conference; "What does it mean to be British?" We aim to establish an international dialogue between young people to investigate their rights, duties and responsibilities as citizens of the newly expanded European Union.
We will support and encourage pupils to both reflect on their own identity and consider what it means to a part of a larger community that extends beyond national boundaries.
The partnership will promote a `Respect Agenda` that fosters respect for themselves and others through a shared understanding of similarities and differences where harmony and diversity are celebrated through the learning process we undertake both in and beyond the project in our institutions and communities

How will this be achieved?
In order to investigate the rights, duties and responsibilities of the European citizen and promote a `Respect` agenda we aim to complete a comprehensive study of young peoples attitudes and aspirations for their futures. The objectives of the partnership are to enable pupils to :

  • Promote the Comenius Project in each school and community. Set up a team of both staff and pupils to deliver via Assemblies/Curriculum/School Newsletters and local/national press.Comenius - Woodlands Worldwide
  • Collect school rules from each partner, disseminate and discuss similarities and differences and share findings with each other.
  • Prepare a European pupils’ set of rules and create a composite poster/theatre presentation designed by partners for presentation, display and/or publication.
  • Extend the investigation to the community e.g. national laws governing alcohol, sex, driving etc. via debates, web conferencing, web site focusing on rights and responsibilities. Partners to share feedback on each other`s responses via `blog`
  • Encourage pupils to reflect and comment on similarities & differences as a way into exploring national identity, what makes us…..British/Estonian etc.? Present and share findings in form of Drama, documentary film, artwork etc.
  • Analyse responses, focus on similarities as the stimulus for investigation into inequality and why some economic migrants are treated as `2nd class citizens`
  • Explore issues (e.g. Language, traditions, dress, belief etc.) around what we should expect from an immigrant choosing to live in another country and what they should expect in return. Share views via debates, web conferencing, web site etc.
  • Create and publish a charter on the rights and responsibilities of a European citizen that promotes respect and understanding that partners sign up to at the end of the investigation the pupils undertake in the project
  • Launch the charter in each institution and community and celebrate what it means to be a European citizen in the 21st Century in a conferenc

    e
. This will feature presentations in a variety of mediums as decided by partners including debates on citizenship and migration and planning for both maintaining links and developing future projects with new and existing partners.
